Dr. Robert E. McCarthy

Dr. Robert McCarthy is an internationally-known authority in integrative medicine as well as a State Licensed (LPC) and Nationally-Board Board Certified (NCC, NCSC, CCMHC) Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC), credentialed Counseling Supervisor (LPCS, ACS) and Licensed (LAC) and Board Certified Addiction Counselor (MAC). He has over fifty years experience in the clinical assessment, diagnosis, remediation and treatment of patients with emotional, physical, neurological, medical and learning disorders.

In addition, Dr. McCarthy holds an advanced Specialist Credential in the areas of Substance Abuse and Co-Occurring Disorders, Geratric Counseling, Developmental Disabilities Counseling, Child and Adolescent Counseling, and Forensic Evaluation that are issued by the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA). He is a Board Certified Life Fellow with the American Board for Certification of Clinical Education and Training (ABCCET) as an integrative healthcare provider, forensic consultant and psychotherapist.    

His work experience over this time period initially included employment in a variety of public and private settings: Private, State and County Psychiatric Hospitals; County and State Outpatient Mental Health Programs; State Correctional Facilities; Private and Public Educational Institutions; Private Residential Programs; as well as numerous College Faculty Appointments; and, eventually, Private Practice.

During the mid to late 1970s, Dr. McCarthy completed formal postgraduate training in psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy at the New York Center for Psychoanalytic Training in New York City, and family therapy in Westchester County, while studying with such prominent psychologists and psychatrists as Dr. Reuben Fine, Dr. Stan Rosenman, Dr. Joseph Levy, Dr. Joseph Richmond, Dr. Clara Torda, Dr. Emanuel Hammer, Dr. Tom Fogarty, and Dr. Phil Geurin.

Many years later, Dr. Joel Lubar at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville added to Dr. McCarthy's interest in bolstering human potential by showing him how to empower others through the use of advanced diagnostic qEEG evaluation and brain-based neurofeedback technologies.

Dr. McCarthy now specializes in qEEG, swLORETA, biofeedback, neurofeedback, hemoencephalography, cranial electrical stimulation, audio-visual entrainment, computerized cognitive training and reconstructive depth therapies.

While decades have passed, Dr. McCarthy's optimism and belief in the limitless potential and buoyancy of the human spirit remains an endless source of motivation and excitement as he works with patients on a daily basis.  

Dr. McCarthy earned his Master of Arts degree from St. John's University in Jamaica, Queens, New York; a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center in San Francisco, California; and, a two-year Postgraduate Certificate in Pain Management from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

In addition, he previously served as Chairperson of a Committee on Special Education in New York State related to Public Law 94-142 and 504 legislation for seven years, and was an Executive Advisory Board Member of the American Psychotherapy Association (APA), American Association of Integrative Medicine (AAIM) and National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists for many, many years. 

He continues to serve on the Executive Advisory Board of the American Board for Certification in Clinical Education and Training (ABCCET), and is the author of Integrative Medicine: Setting-Up-A-State-of-the-Art Practice published by the Biofeedback Federation of Europe (BFE) that is distributed worldwide.

In 1990, Dr. McCarthy was also selected as the American Mental Health Counselor Association's Counselor of the Year from a pool of nationwide nominees, and was named a Master Therapist by the American Psychotherapy Association several years later.

Dr. McCarthy also served in the past at various points in his career on numerous National and State Committees for the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA).

Furthermore, Dr. McCarthy was honored with a plague by the American Association of Integrative Medicine (AAIM) for being a Featured Lecturer at their Executive Summit Meeting held in Santa Barbara, California (August 2015), and that same year served as a Consultant for the Chicago Cubs organization in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He also previously worked as a Consultant for the Myrtle Beach Police Department and various medical and law practices throughout the greater Myrtle Beach area; and, s numbr of years ago became the first clinician in the country to receive Board Certification in Pediatric Integrative Medicine granted by the American Association of Integrative Medicine (AAIM).

For the last thirty years, Dr. McCarthy has been the Executive Clinical Director of McCarthy Counseling Associates, PA in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. There he and his colleagues continue to work with a wide range of psychophysiological, neurological, learning and forensic issues referred by various psychiatric, medical, educational, and other numerous other community-based programs.

His office is always equipped with state-of-the-art, FDA-registered digital equipment and computer software for doing psychophysiological assessment and treatment that now includes Deymed EEG hardware and Neuroguide and SKIL software for collecting brain wave recordings and providing functional brain scan results as well as quality neurofeedback treatment, and Thought Technology's Infiniti System for doing somatic biofeedback.

Dr. McCarthy was Board Certified in both adult and pediatric Integrative Medicine by the American Association of Integrative Medicine (AAIM), and remains a Board Certified Senior Fellow in EEG and General Biofeedback with the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA).

Furthermore, he is a Fellow of the Academy of Learning and Developmental Disorders (ALDD), International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling and Psychotherapy (IABMCP) and Professional Academy of Custody Evaluators (PACE) as well as numerous other interdisciplinary organizations.

He was also a Board Certified Post-Traumatic Stress Clinician with the American Psychotherapy Association (APA) and Certified Forensic Consultant with the American College of Forensic Examiners; and, remains a Board Certified Clinical Traumatologist with the American Board for Certification in Clinical Education and Training (ABCCET) and Diplomate of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (ABETS). 

Finally, Dr. McCarthy provides comprehensive, advanced, and accurate differential diagnoses and formulates meaningful treatment plans that usually enable a person to achieve their desired therapeutic and personal goals.

Dr. McCarthy was recently (12/2019) selected to author Chapter 39 in a landmark book entitled "Neurofeedback: The First Fifty Years of Neurofeedback" edited by James R. Evans, Mary Blair Dellinger and the late Harold L. Russell; and, recently added photobiomodulation technology to his practice.
